SAMR, Technology, and Project Based Learning

What is SAMR?

SAMR stands for substitution, augmentation, modification, and redefinition. Substitution is the very basic performance of students. They move up the scale, much like in Bloom's Taxonomy. Substitution and augmentation are related to the bottom three tiers of Bloom's, while modification and redefinition are related to the top three tiers on Bloom's.

How does SAMR connect to technology and PBL?

SAMR is created to integrate technology into every lesson. It is important to note that Puentedura refers to technology has tools that enhance learning such as paper and pencil, or sophisticated websites and programs.

In the gold standard of PBL, techonolgy should be connected in some way. Technology is everywhere in our modern lives. Students should not learn within a vacuum, therefore we should expose them to different types of technology. By using SAMR within your PBL lessons, you ensure that students are using technology to enrich their learning rather than using it as a disconnected piece of the puzzle.
